The Zhong Jie retail promenade, a renowned landmark of northeast China, has long been one Shenyang\u2019s main attractions. One of the design goals of the project is to create a strong link to Zhong Jie, both visually and physically. Xiao Dong Street has been transformed into a pedestrian promenade, with greenery to soften the urban landscape, while kiosks are strategically placed to activate the space. Mall entrances not only promote the interaction between indoor and outdoor space, but also facilitate the traffic flow from the subway below. Set in an attractive part of Dalian along Dalian\u2019s Zhonghua Road in the commercial district, the project presents a viable program that complements the sites\u2019 direct access to the subway system and the city\u2019s new transportation hub. Aiming to capture an entire urban lifestyle, the project features residences alongside a vibrant commercial, entertainment, and dining destination. The architecture responds to a gradual slope from one end of the site to the other through a continuous arching form that wraps the four masses and rises and falls with the elevation. The retail\/entertainment zone flanks the north and west street facades, while a cascading parking structure with roof gardens borders the south and east facades. A three-story atrium containing shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues fills the space with natural light through its curvilinear roof, creating a play of patterns on the floor\u2019s variegated stonework. Through the planar boundaries of canopies and vertical fins used to emphasize the entries, the \u00a0scale of the towers is mitigated, while further enhancing the experience at the street level. How can a series of scattered buildings achieve a formal coherence with a lightness of touch to support the city\u2019s new dynamics? The solution is various linking spaces, forms, and designs. The 8 towers, along with the smaller buildings, are united by a large plaza and visually differentiated into three separate but identifiable groups. Materials were chosen to mix the modern with the traditional. The base of the 8 towers housing the retail portion is clad with indigenous stone for a solid, urban appearance, while the upper residential levels are wrapped in lightweight aluminum. The program included a 19-story office tower, six 7-story office towers, two 24-story residential towers and two levels of underground parking. The design positions the residential towers to the north end and the 19-story office tower at the south edge.
