Organized around an elevated park, a variety of public and private relationships arising between the outdoor spaces become the development\u2019s focal point. Dalian, known for its robust shipping industry, inspired the nautical imagery found on the building forms. A reclaimed site along the waterfront was chosen as the project\u2019s location, and the development\u2019s massing and materiality were conceived as a response to the water\u2019s edge. Reintroducing a natural setting completes the composition, softening the architecture\u2019s inherent rigidity and making the project a fluid outgrowth of its surrounding context. The Riverside Neighborhood is comprised of 14 mid- and high-rise riverfront residential towers, situated in a vast park, overlooking a canal that extends the length of the site. Ground level shops and restaurants overlook a tree-lined canal promenade, extending the aquatic theme. The Garden Neighborhood is the more intimate townhouse area to the west, comprised of eight blocks of smaller scale buildings and gardens. Building sizes range from 4-story townhouses to 10-story residential buildings. The three main east-west streets have a canal along one side, re-creating a traditional Suzhou water town atmosphere. The Zhong Jie retail promenade, a renowned landmark of northeast China, has long been one Shenyang\u2019s main attractions. One of the design goals of the project is to create a strong link to Zhong Jie, both visually and physically. Xiao Dong Street has been transformed into a pedestrian promenade, with greenery to soften the urban landscape, while kiosks are strategically placed to activate the space. Mall entrances not only promote the interaction between indoor and outdoor space, but also facilitate the traffic flow from the subway below. Anticipating its future relationship to the planned Metro Station, the project is divided between two distinct, complementary zones. The retail\/entertainment zone flanks the north and west street facades, while a cascading parking structure with roof gardens borders the south and east facades. A three-story atrium containing shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues fills the space with natural light through its curvilinear roof, creating a play of patterns on the floor\u2019s variegated stonework. Through the planar boundaries of canopies and vertical fins used to emphasize the entries, the \u00a0scale of the towers is mitigated, while further enhancing the experience at the street level. The program included a 19-story office tower, six 7-story office towers, two 24-story residential towers and two levels of underground parking. The design positions the residential towers to the north end and the 19-story office tower at the south edge.
