The design philosophy behind Parque Comercial Jerez is rooted in the historic flamenco tradition of the city. With the existing facades of the Parque de Medianas that outline the plaza standing as passive background, Parque Comercial Jerez emerges as the flamenco performance. The design philosophy reveals itself with the use of vibrant colors, strong organic forms, and horizontal lines that mimic the motion and spirit of flamenco \u2014as well as echoing the motion of the vehicular traffic circulating the site. Variations in color and materiality on the facades of the building and in the paving represent the musical notes of the dance performance. Spectacular roof canopies float over this \u201cdance\u201d while providing rain and sun protection for pedestrians below. Drawn towards the project\u2019s entrance by a dramatically lit tower, the visitor finds a large paved plaza in an appropriately Spanish style. The shopping loop is interrupted by the main plaza and smaller squares in front of the fashion anchor, the supermarket, and health club. Three levels of retail and entertainment, including areas to eat and relax, a \u201cKid\u2019s City\u201d entertainment area, and a department store, are covered by an expansive canopy. Based on earthquake-resistant construction standards common to the region, the mall is conceived and built as a concrete structure, but through a series of ingenious and unconventional means that aim to test the known limits of the material. This approach is most prevalent in the cantilevered massing, which works to create a series of public spaces, including main entrances into the site. Internal transparency became a primary focus of the design, taking into account the low mountains that form the backdrop of the landscape. Situated on the outskirts of Goiania near the airport, Passieo Das Aguas uses a sloping site and existing creek to create dramatic vistas and soaring volumes in this largely single-story project. Set on a hot, humid site, Goiania\u2019s overarching theme of water cools the project, psychologically and physically. Water elements and a design vocabulary inspired by the nearby creek round out the \u201cParque das Aguas\u201d concept. The site topography allows for parking to be placed under the main retail level to maximize the site and allow for possible future expansions. The Cinema and Food court areas are placed on this lower level as well, creating a dramatic two level volume that flows out to the existing creek. This indoor\/outdoor space features spectacular views to the rolling hills of the region. Motifs spun off from the iconic Union Jack flag can be found throughout the shopping center, from the bold graphics treatment on the exterior to the finely crafted interior details borrowed from the geometric British image. The site presented a particularly difficult challenge, with an immense grade differential between opposite ends of the site. Parking and additional levels of shopping compensate for the grade difference, along with elegantly-terraced landscaping leading to the street level. Additionally, the shopping center is connected to a civic center through a heavily-landscaped pedestrian promenade.
