Part of a larger residential development plan, the Yantai shopping center arose from a previous design, its foundation already in place. The unique challenge was to optimize the existing footprint and structure by creating a shopping destination with the most leasable space. A loop scheme proved to be the ideal solution, with retail shops organized around a bullet-shaped volume which provided maximal sight lines and pedestrian circulation. Highlighted internally to resemble a red lantern, the bullet-shaped block was turned into an iconic feature of the project. The exterior is simple, with a sweeping fa\u00e7ade punctuated by a series of projecting boxes that contain display windows for the retail tenants. Through the articulation of the fa\u00e7ade, both in material and in the gesture of the swooping curve, the massing appeared as a unified development, fulfilling the client\u2019s ambitions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

The two ends of the interior retail space are anchored by a retail tenant and an entertainment and food venue. The main mall is designed as a series of stacked, column-free serpentine balconies, interrupted only by the center court and diagonal bridges, promoting a highly interactive and dynamic shopping experience. The entire length of the mall is lit by indirect natural daylight. The play of linear and curving facades makes for a continually changing spatial environment, creating a series of internal public spaces which have a unique character. This theme drives every aspect of the design from the bulkhead section to the skylight design. The space is dynamic and fluid, creating great interaction between people and architecture, and the circulation of human activity has been well planned through the dynamic interior space. The project serves as a link between the old and new portions of Yihe City at a major intersection. Set in an attractive part of Dalian along Dalian\u2019s Zhonghua Road in the commercial district, the project presents a viable program that complements the sites\u2019 direct access to the subway system and the city\u2019s new transportation hub. Aiming to capture an entire urban lifestyle, the project features residences alongside a vibrant commercial, entertainment, and dining destination. The architecture responds to a gradual slope from one end of the site to the other through a continuous arching form that wraps the four masses and rises and falls with the elevation.
