With Xiamen\u2019s lush vegetation and tropical climate, HaiCang Bayside Market\u2019s design concept is modeled on a tropical\/modern resort style combining greenery and a series of contemporary buildings. Climatic elements, as well as native materials, are used to create a natural, warm, and inviting experience for the passersby. Shading devices enhance the open-air street walks and help to mitigate the tropical climate. Overlooking Shenzhen Bay, OCT Bay is a unique shopping and entertainment development with a diverse range of retail shops, restaurants, hotels and entertainment facilities. The site is divided into two distinct lakefront experiences; the O\u2019Plaza Mall and Marriott Hotel to the north; and the boutique Bay Breeze Hotel, restaurant village and IMAX theater to the east. The open-air waterfront is inspired by the traditional fishing villages of Shenzhen, with canals and shopping streets animating the development.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

From the initial Master Plan sketch, to the design of the individual buildings, OCT Bay was designed to create an engaging visitor experience. Two possible solutions: One, to reprise a medieval island city not unlike Ile de la Cite in Paris; and at the other extreme, to recast the tropical villages of Maldives or Bali. These concepts engendered Medieval Island, Island Resort, and Tropical Paradise, approaches based on time-tested principles of good planning, blending humanist habitation with a vibrant retail environment. Thorough retail and city planning delivered a strategy that has proven very successful in the past. When the architecture finally emerges on stage, that robust strategy will be fulfilled. The newly coined design could be called \u201cretail tropical modernism\u201d\u2014an architecture of both place and pleasure \u2014 a contemporary reinterpretation of vernacular traditions, taking the best of both worlds. The city\u2019s growth hinges on the Yixing Master Plan, which provides a new hub for cultural, residential and commercial activities, and a link to the newly built Kempinski Hotel. Engaging the waterfront, a boardwalk gives the Master Plan a unique position within the city. The design aims to smooth the transition, at a human scale, between the waterfront and the city\u2019s vertical growth.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Deeply influenced by the region\u2019s historic villages, the design creates a unique, intimate experience. To achieve all this, the Master Plan is organized around three pathways: an urban street, an outdoor shopping mall, and a boardwalk. Key buildings are placed to frame views, giving distinction to different zones. Befitting the region\u2019s climate, the largely outdoor complex encourages waterfront walking, while bringing water to plazas via a series of courtyard pools that naturally cool and ventilate public areas.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Thorough retail and city planning delivered a strategy that has proven very successful in the past. When the architecture finally emerges on stage, that robust strategy will be fulfilled. Deeply influenced by the region\u2019s historic villages, the design creates a unique, intimate experience. To achieve all this, the Master Plan is organized around three pathways: an urban street, an outdoor shopping mall, and a boardwalk. Key buildings are placed to frame views, giving distinction to different zones. Befitting the region\u2019s climate, the largely outdoor complex encourages waterfront walking, while bringing water to plazas via a series of courtyard pools that naturally cool and ventilate public areas.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
