The project has a unique entertainment center: An indoor, tech-themed park for teenagers. It also offers a concept aimed specifically at the male population: A multi-brand car showroom on the first level. The project has additional attractions addressed to families, such as the Home Decoration Center on Level 2. The surrounding location of Blue City is known for its many premium office and apartment buildings, as well as its proximity to Ochota and Ursus, which are among the fastest growing neighborhoods in the city. Gemdale Plaza project was built in 2007 as a business hub near Beijing\u2019s commercial core. \u00a0To capture the area\u2019s burgeoning growth, the task was to transform the conference center into a dynamic shopping destination. The structural concrete podium, designed by SOM, made it a challenge to maximize the leasable space per floor. Improved circulation allows visitors to flow throughout the space, flanked by unique retail outlets. Cued by the tower\u2019s bend motif, the facade uses creases as a way to manage the site\u2019s scale by blurring the floor plates, giving the podium a deceptively grounded quality. Through the layered fa\u00e7ade, the glazed exterior provides reflections while the mesh acts to maintain transparency to the interior while providing ample sun shading. The solution was to create a loop by connecting the ends of the L-shape arrangement, thus forming a large central public garden. The garden is then enclosed and conditioned, but the design of the roof allows the court to take on an exterior feel as though being under a large Pergola. Carefully filtered natural daylight filters through the skylights and the continuous clerestory, accentuating the exterior feeling of the Garden Court.
