The partial renovation of CascaiShopping, with a new addition, won a prestigious 2004 ICSC Europe Award in the category of Refurbishments\/Extensions. The over-scaled entry canopy ties the retail volume to the parking deck, marking entrances and gathering visitors from all levels. Bold exterior graphics screen the parking structure, while undulating wall units break down the scale of the long walls. The existing Cascais Shopping will be expanded to include approximately 10, 500 square meters of new gross buildable area, and another level of parking of 10, 500 square meters will be added adjacent to the existing mall\u2019s second level. Furthermore, the existing parking on the roof will be extended over to the new retail addition. The design exploits the level change by allowing the project\u2019s fa\u00e7ade to move up the hill in scaled-down segments and smoothly integrate into the town. The design integrates into the environment further through its materials and train station architecture style. The fa\u00e7ade and overhanging roof use traditional materials such as stone, tile and brick, as well as wood panels, cast-iron details and steel canopies. Nestled into a hillside of the small town of Sao Jo\u00e3o Da Madeira, this new retail center is the town\u2019s largest building. Because of its size, the challenge was to create a modern, unified design which was also responsive and friendly at a human scale. The retail flows along a single promenade beginning with a receiving plaza. The fa\u00e7ade is semi-transparent, opening shoppers to the urban environment. Outside, a sequence of intertwining landscaped stone terraces and stairs create a grand entrance, where the food courts expand onto this plaza, sheltered beneath a massive canopy. A bridge was needed to connect the supermarket and second level of the shopping center. Inspired by inhabited medieval bridges, the bridge of 8 Avenida is packed with small-scale retail. To the rear of the project, the rectilinear form reprises the hotel which houses patients visiting the thermal hospital. An existing supermarket is located across from the project site, so there was a vital opportunity to bridge the project over the road and create a new gateway into the city while connecting the shopping center to the supermarket. On the third level is an outdoor terrace from which patrons can view out toward the surrounding landscape and the future of the city. The Centre houses cinemas, fine dining facilities, and hundreds of retail tenants, providing a dimension of internal flexibility for the \u00a0project\u2019s makeup as the needs of the surrounding community change over time.
