Gemdale Plaza project was built in 2007 as a business hub near Beijing\u2019s commercial core. \u00a0To capture the area\u2019s burgeoning growth, the task was to transform the conference center into a dynamic shopping destination. The structural concrete podium, designed by SOM, made it a challenge to maximize the leasable space per floor. Improved circulation allows visitors to flow throughout the space, flanked by unique retail outlets. Cued by the tower\u2019s bend motif, the facade uses creases as a way to manage the site\u2019s scale by blurring the floor plates, giving the podium a deceptively grounded quality. Through the layered fa\u00e7ade, the glazed exterior provides reflections while the mesh acts to maintain transparency to the interior while providing ample sun shading. Aiming to capture an entire urban lifestyle, the project features residences alongside a vibrant commercial, entertainment, and dining destination. The architecture responds to a gradual slope from one end of the site to the other through a continuous arching form that wraps the four masses and rises and falls with the elevation. This core features an interior garden area for terrace-style eating, providing a touch of nature which attracts shoppers to the upper levels and the retail elements. The play of linear and curving facades makes for a continually changing spatial environment, creating a series of internal public spaces which have a unique character. The curtain draws the public in through a series of controlled lifts of the brow, demarcating key public elements within the commercial center, as well as storefronts and public plazas. Every form and crease in the structure\u2019s skin creates a strong symbiotic relationship with the movements of the public as they circulate within. The towers complete the design, providing a punctuated end to the sweeping form of the commercial and retail base. Because of its size, the challenge was to create a modern, unified design which was also responsive and friendly at a human scale. The retail flows along a single promenade beginning with a receiving plaza. The fa\u00e7ade is semi-transparent, opening shoppers to the urban environment. Outside, a sequence of intertwining landscaped stone terraces and stairs create a grand entrance, where the food courts expand onto this plaza, sheltered beneath a massive canopy. A bridge was needed to connect the supermarket and second level of the shopping center. Inspired by inhabited medieval bridges, the bridge of 8 Avenida is packed with small-scale retail.
