Because of its size, the challenge was to create a modern, unified design which was also responsive and friendly at a human scale. The retail flows along a single promenade beginning with a receiving plaza. The fa\u00e7ade is semi-transparent, opening shoppers to the urban environment. Outside, a sequence of intertwining landscaped stone terraces and stairs create a grand entrance, where the food courts expand onto this plaza, sheltered beneath a massive canopy. A bridge was needed to connect the supermarket and second level of the shopping center. Inspired by inhabited medieval bridges, the bridge of 8 Avenida is packed with small-scale retail. The long, narrow site lies parallel to a marked grade change in the topography of this medieval Portuguese city. The design exploits the level change by allowing the project\u2019s fa\u00e7ade to move up the hill in scaled-down segments and smoothly integrate into the town. The design integrates into the environment further through its materials and train station architecture style. The fa\u00e7ade and overhanging roof use traditional materials such as stone, tile and brick, as well as wood panels, cast-iron details and steel canopies. The project\u2019s massing takes on two separate forms that work in harmony with each other. To the rear of the project, the rectilinear form reprises the hotel which houses patients visiting the thermal hospital. An existing supermarket is located across from the project site, so there was a vital opportunity to bridge the project over the road and create a new gateway into the city while connecting the shopping center to the supermarket. On the third level is an outdoor terrace from which patrons can view out toward the surrounding landscape and the future of the city. Sited in a resort area, Burgas fills with people during the summer, drawing even more attention to the shopping center. The plaza in front of the Grand Galleria is redesigned and reinvigorated with curvilinear walls, as well as a dynamic cascading water feature, creating a newly energized city center and plaza. The facade of the Grand Galleria is a full-height glazed curtain wall which looks out onto the pedestrian plaza in front, seamlessly connecting the outside with the inside. This visually opens up the vertical circulation of the escalators and the activity within the shopping center.
