Located in a small Portuguese city north of Lisbon renowned for its medicinal hot springs and \u201cthermal hospital,\u201d this retail center emerges from its historical context in fluid forms. The project\u2019s massing takes on two separate forms that work in harmony with each other. To the rear of the project, the rectilinear form reprises the hotel which houses patients visiting the thermal hospital. An existing supermarket is located across from the project site, so there was a vital opportunity to bridge the project over the road and create a new gateway into the city while connecting the shopping center to the supermarket. On the third level is an outdoor terrace from which patrons can view out toward the surrounding landscape and the future of the city. This dichotomy of form creates a unique building that is both rooted in the past and reaching towards the future of this growing city.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Additional interior and exterior decorations reinforce the maritime theme, with expertly molded wooden forms, heavy use of natural lighting, and vivid, arresting color on the exterior fa\u00e7ade. The Centre houses cinemas, fine dining facilities, and hundreds of retail tenants, providing a dimension of internal flexibility for the \u00a0project\u2019s makeup as the needs of the surrounding community change over time. Nestled into a hillside of the small town of Sao Jo\u00e3o Da Madeira, this new retail center is the town\u2019s largest building. Because of its size, the challenge was to create a modern, unified design which was also responsive and friendly at a human scale. The retail flows along a single promenade beginning with a receiving plaza. The fa\u00e7ade is semi-transparent, opening shoppers to the urban environment. Outside, a sequence of intertwining landscaped stone terraces and stairs create a grand entrance, where the food courts expand onto this plaza, sheltered beneath a massive canopy. A bridge was needed to connect the supermarket and second level of the shopping center. Inspired by inhabited medieval bridges, the bridge of 8 Avenida is packed with small-scale retail. A large cluster of rainforest Buritisal palm trees shade the stunning outdoor food court. A grouping of 50-meter tall Castanheira trees provides a spectacular entrance for visitors. The dramatic meeting of the nearby Rio Negro and the Amazon River inspired the design of Manaus Mall. The two rivers come together but do not mix, creating a multicolored swirl for several kilometers. The Manaus Mall reflects this junction of two powerful rivers through the roof and interior design. Two slightly different colors, which come close to mixing, separate two sides of the interior. Similar to bird watching and forest lookout stations, outdoor dining terraces are immersed in the Amazonian environment.
