The design of the Rio Sul Shopping Centre takes the form of a massive ship in homage to the rich naval history of the Seixal\/Arrentela parish region, a central part of the development of the Portuguese maritime heritage. Additional interior and exterior decorations reinforce the maritime theme, with expertly molded wooden forms, heavy use of natural lighting, and vivid, arresting color on the exterior fa\u00e7ade. The Centre houses cinemas, fine dining facilities, and hundreds of retail tenants, providing a dimension of internal flexibility for the \u00a0project\u2019s makeup as the needs of the surrounding community change over time. The plaza in front of the Grand Galleria is redesigned and reinvigorated with curvilinear walls, as well as a dynamic cascading water feature, creating a newly energized city center and plaza. The facade of the Grand Galleria is a full-height glazed curtain wall which looks out onto the pedestrian plaza in front, seamlessly connecting the outside with the inside. This visually opens up the vertical circulation of the escalators and the activity within the shopping center.
