Set in the municipality of Covilha, Portugal, a city dramatically located at the base of the scenic and rugged Serra da Estrela mountain range, the Serra Shopping district is a celebration of the local architectural context and design approach. With the surrounding landscape as a premise for open-air design, the architecture of the region is strongly manifested in the two-story massing, using characteristic materials of the vernacular in a manner that complements the expansive openings that provide breathtaking views of the encompassing vistas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Additional interior and exterior decorations reinforce the maritime theme, with expertly molded wooden forms, heavy use of natural lighting, and vivid, arresting color on the exterior fa\u00e7ade. The Centre houses cinemas, fine dining facilities, and hundreds of retail tenants, providing a dimension of internal flexibility for the \u00a0project\u2019s makeup as the needs of the surrounding community change over time. Nestled into a hillside of the small town of Sao Jo\u00e3o Da Madeira, this new retail center is the town\u2019s largest building. Because of its size, the challenge was to create a modern, unified design which was also responsive and friendly at a human scale. The retail flows along a single promenade beginning with a receiving plaza. The fa\u00e7ade is semi-transparent, opening shoppers to the urban environment. Outside, a sequence of intertwining landscaped stone terraces and stairs create a grand entrance, where the food courts expand onto this plaza, sheltered beneath a massive canopy. A bridge was needed to connect the supermarket and second level of the shopping center. Inspired by inhabited medieval bridges, the bridge of 8 Avenida is packed with small-scale retail. Based on earthquake-resistant construction standards common to the region, the mall is conceived and built as a concrete structure, but through a series of ingenious and unconventional means that aim to test the known limits of the material. This approach is most prevalent in the cantilevered massing, which works to create a series of public spaces, including main entrances into the site. Internal transparency became a primary focus of the design, taking into account the low mountains that form the backdrop of the landscape. Motifs spun off from the iconic Union Jack flag can be found throughout the shopping center, from the bold graphics treatment on the exterior to the finely crafted interior details borrowed from the geometric British image. The site presented a particularly difficult challenge, with an immense grade differential between opposite ends of the site. Parking and additional levels of shopping compensate for the grade difference, along with elegantly-terraced landscaping leading to the street level. Additionally, the shopping center is connected to a civic center through a heavily-landscaped pedestrian promenade.
