The Grand Galleria is well located adjacent to the main pedestrian street and plaza that leads from the center of the town down to the waterfront. Sited in a resort area, Burgas fills with people during the summer, drawing even more attention to the shopping center. The plaza in front of the Grand Galleria is redesigned and reinvigorated with curvilinear walls, as well as a dynamic cascading water feature, creating a newly energized city center and plaza. The facade of the Grand Galleria is a full-height glazed curtain wall which looks out onto the pedestrian plaza in front, seamlessly connecting the outside with the inside. This visually opens up the vertical circulation of the escalators and the activity within the shopping center. The architecture\u2019s intent is to invite visitors inside, while actively engaging inhabitants of the outer plaza who otherwise would be isolated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

In homage to Brazil\u2019s coffee-growing region, the Campo Grande takes inspiration from the area\u2019s plantation houses. Design keys from the vernacular plantation houses, known as fazendas, define the project, from the facades\u2019 proportions to the articulation of the interior bulkheads of the tenant spaces. At the heart of the development is a large public garden that takes advantage of the region\u2019s temperate climate, allowing the dining court to be enjoyed year-round. As important as the regionalism in the design, the need for expansion was also a major factor of the Campo Grande project. The overall intent of the structure from the very beginning of the design process focused around the need for the future addition of two levels, one below grade, and one at the third story. Set on a hot, humid site, Goiania\u2019s overarching theme of water cools the project, psychologically and physically. Water elements and a design vocabulary inspired by the nearby creek round out the \u201cParque das Aguas\u201d concept. The site topography allows for parking to be placed under the main retail level to maximize the site and allow for possible future expansions. The Cinema and Food court areas are placed on this lower level as well, creating a dramatic two level volume that flows out to the existing creek. This indoor\/outdoor space features spectacular views to the rolling hills of the region. The project\u2019s massing takes on two separate forms that work in harmony with each other. To the rear of the project, the rectilinear form reprises the hotel which houses patients visiting the thermal hospital. An existing supermarket is located across from the project site, so there was a vital opportunity to bridge the project over the road and create a new gateway into the city while connecting the shopping center to the supermarket. On the third level is an outdoor terrace from which patrons can view out toward the surrounding landscape and the future of the city.
