Luz Del Tajo, \u201clight of the river Tajo,\u201d is a three-level development on the outskirts of Toledo, Spain. Its shops, restaurants, and cinema \u2013 with parking for 2,300 cars \u2013 are set into an existing hill. With forms and surfaces inspired by Toledo\u2019s many gardens and surrounding hills and valleys, the project utilizes traditional local building materials such as stone and brick, with highlights in wood and ceramic tile, giving the center a sense of permanence. Architectural features are articulated with color, transparent glass, and artisan-quality forged iron. The sloping metal roofs provide enclosure and sun protection, refining and lightening large terraced areas, and creating an undulating horizontal fa\u00e7ade that recalls the surrounding landscape. The retail structure builds upon this appeal to activate the void between a new cinema complex and the stadium, all unified by a surrounding public park. Drawn towards the project\u2019s entrance by a dramatically lit tower, the visitor finds a large paved plaza in an appropriately Spanish style. The shopping loop is interrupted by the main plaza and smaller squares in front of the fashion anchor, the supermarket, and health club. Three levels of retail and entertainment, including areas to eat and relax, a \u201cKid\u2019s City\u201d entertainment area, and a department store, are covered by an expansive canopy. In homage to Brazil\u2019s coffee-growing region, the Campo Grande takes inspiration from the area\u2019s plantation houses. Design keys from the vernacular plantation houses, known as fazendas, define the project, from the facades\u2019 proportions to the articulation of the interior bulkheads of the tenant spaces. At the heart of the development is a large public garden that takes advantage of the region\u2019s temperate climate, allowing the dining court to be enjoyed year-round. As important as the regionalism in the design, the need for expansion was also a major factor of the Campo Grande project. The overall intent of the structure from the very beginning of the design process focused around the need for the future addition of two levels, one below grade, and one at the third story. Elevating the project without changing the structure involved four elements: A friendly landscape environment to replace the original uninviting plazas, a full graphics package to give the development personality, the invention of a false skylight with backlighting that appears to reveal natural light in order to mitigate an oppressively low ceiling, and a comprehensive redesign of the retail organization to fashion a more cohesive layout along with enhanced communication between floors and tenants. The project achieved a significant upgrade in quality without altering the building form, so that new permitting was never required. Furthermore, there was no delay in construction.
