Three levels of shops are connected visually and physically to the traditional streets and alleys. The commercial buildings lie perpendicular to the main street, allowing easy pedestrian flow through internal streets. Shop fronts lie below expansive steel and glass pergolas. Articulated metal fascias at the tops of the retail podium fold to ascend the office fronts and refold to form near horizontal roof elements. Defining the open spaces and facades, the architecture reflects \u201cwabi sabi,\u201d the Japanese art of impermanence, imparting transparency, humility, and asymmetry. This new entrepot is unique for its open plan and marketplace character, and also for its span of several city blocks under singular land ownership, a rare opportunity to create a unified commercial development within Japan\u2019s often-feudal land patterns. As the center transitions from the outdoor experience to the indoor destination, visitors will encounter bridges and activity along a path that leads to the Parcel 4 and 5 forms. With striated patterns and terraces that puncture the solid mass, the mall evokes the metamorphic rock formations of the nearby Baiyun Mountain. The entire length of the development will feature active zones, from the ice rink with views out toward the tower and mountain, to the rooftop vista of the city surrounded by the flowing forms of the residential towers.
